Pomegranate Margarita
When it comes to margaritas, I have very strong feelings. I am kind of a plain Jane purist. A classic margarita on the rocks with salt on the rim is usually my drink of choice.
That’s until I decided I wanted to make a “perfect for the holiday season” type of cocktail!
That’s how this colorful and super tasty drink came into my life. I have to admit, it’s been a love affair ever since. I am totally obsessed with this delicious pomegranate margarita!
On a trip to the supermarket during the cold weather months, I found the most beautiful pomegranates. Since the holidays were upon us, I decided that a bright jewel red pomegranate cocktail mixed with green limes were a must.
Since I love tequila, a pomegranate margarita seemed like the perfect drink for the season. A light and refreshing cocktail that was a bit tart with natural sweetness from the fruit. Nothing too sweet (it’s a cocktail not dessert!), and not too strong but with enough kick to make us feel like we were at a party.
Pomegranate Margarita Ingredients
besides the ingredients below, you will need ice. For exact amounts, check the printable recipe card below.
- Pomegranate Juice: I usually buy Pom. Keep it chilled in the fridge.
- Tequila: I usually make cocktails with tequila blanco, also known as silver tequila. I also make mixed drinks with tequila reposado, which is aged in oak barrels for as little as two months and up to a year.
- Triple Sec: Grand Marnier (orange liqueur) can also be used.
- Lime Juice: Fresh lime juice is a must.
- Garnishes: Salt, pomegranate seeds, lime wedges.
How To Make Pomegranate Margaritas
- Salt the Rims: Pour a small amount of pomegranate juice in a small shallow bowl or plate. Spread the salt on a small plate. Moisten the outer edges of the glasses with the pomegranate juice, then coat with the salt.
- Mix: In a small pitcher mix the chilled pomegranate juice, tequila, triple sec and lime juice. Mix to combine.
- Serve: Fill margarita glasses with ice cubes, pour the pomegranate margarita and garnish with lime wedges and pomegranate seeds.

Pomegranate Margarita Recipe Tips
- This cocktail is amazing just served as is however, it’s even better with salt on the rim. Sugar is also a great option if you like sweeter drinks.
- Adjust the ingredients to your taste. the beauty of making drinks at home is that you can adjust the flavors to your taste. More juice, less tequila, it’s all up to you.
- If this margarita is not sweet enough for you, you can add agave syrup or simple syrup.

Love this recipe. Great flavor. Not too sweet and not too boozy (unless you want to add extra tequila). We didn’t have to make any changes.

I have made this recipe so many times and I’ve been meaning to leave a review because this is by far the best margarita on the planet (and possibly in space too). A million stars.

Is the pomegranate juice unsweetened when you add it?
Kathy says
I use Pom. I believe is sweetened.
Courtney K says
Pom has no added sugar. It is quite sweet (34g sugar per serving), but it’s natural sugar
Kathy says
Thank you Courtney. I will make a correction. I really appreciate it.

Fantastic margarita! Made 4 cups worth, was perfect amount for 2 people! Tasted delicious! I was concerned that the sugar content of the pomegranate juice would make it too sweet but it was just right & no headache the next day! 😉 This recipe is a keeper!!!

It’s deelicious, fresh and rich flavor joined to the beautiful sexy color just tells you a lot about what you’ll experienced. Love it!!

Wow, these are fantastic!I never thought I would like anything but the classic margarita made with real lime juice, tequila and Triple Sec – or in my case Grand Marnier because I don’t care for Triple Sec. I’m really into pomegranates this year so I wanted to try to incorporate it into a margarita and I’m so glad I found this recipe. It’s quite tart but sweet enough for everyone to enjoy it. I made up a pitcher for a party tomorrow but my husband and I can’t stop refilling our tasting glasses. I might have to make up a new batch tomorrow!
Kathy says
Thank you Mandi! We always have to make a triple batch! Cheers!

This is a most delicious drink! For those times you want to make just a drink or two instead of a pitcher, might you be able to break it down by the individual drink for the mathematically challenged? 🙂

I’ve usually been margarita-averse because I don’t love tequila… until recently. Turns out I just never had the good stuff. So, looks like this will be a go-to this summer! Looks so yummy, and super refreshing.
Kathy says
Thank you! Good tequila makes a difference!

We made a few pitchers of this margarita on the weekend. It was a big hit at our dinner party. Very simple and tasty. They had the right amount of alcohol and sweetness. We don’t care for sugary cocktails so this was perfect for us. Will be making this often.
