Creamy Whipped Coffee is absolutely irresistible and a great way to make your morning coffee super special. This Dalgona Whipped Coffee recipe is made with only 3 ingredients and can be served hot or cold!
This fluffy and delicious whipped coffee may look fancy but the fact is, you don’t need a coffee maker or espresso machine to make it at home. This decadent frothy coffee is simply made with instant coffee, sugar and water whipped into the most luscious and creamy drink!
What Is Whipped Coffee?
Whipped Coffee is also known as Dalgona coffee, a popular drink from Korea that made its way onto Tik Tok (some call it TikTok coffee) and YouTube and became the latest internet cooking craze.
The name Dalgona comes from a Korean sponge candy that resembles honeycomb. The sweet candy tastes like caramel, has a light crunch and a melt in your mouth texture.
I grew up drinking “cafe batido” (whipped coffee in Spanish), which is simply instant coffee and sugar whipped together and poured over hot milk. I knew how good it tasted but I never thought of it as the next foodie trend. I am however, excited to see how this simple coffee recipe has become so popular.
Dalgona Coffee Recipe Ingredients
- Instant Coffee: I use Nescafe Classico Instant Coffee but any instant coffee works. Instant espresso powder can also be used.
- Granulated Sugar: I use white granulated sugar but other sugars like brown sugar, coconut sugar and granulated sweeteners like Monk fruit or Natvia work as well. Liquid sweeteners do not work for this recipe.
- Hot Water: I always use hot boiling water.
- Milk: Hot or cold milk can be used. You can also use Half and Half or heavy cream for a richer creamier more decadent drink.
How To Make Whipped Coffee
Making this coffee recipe couldn’t be easier. Although you can beat the ingredients by hand, I highly recommend using a hand mixer as it definitely speeds up the process. You don’t need to use a stand mixer like Kitchen Aid, unless you are making a big batch!
- Place equal parts of instant coffee, sugar and hot water in a bowl.
- Beat with a hand mixer until fluffy and frothy. I like to scrape the sides of the bowl with a spatula a couple of times.
- Pour milk in a glass (hot, warm or cold)
- Top the milk with the whipped instant coffee. Serve. To enjoy the perfect coffee drink, stir to combine.
If you are wondering how fluffy does the whipped coffee mix need to be, or for how long to whip the coffee, I will say that it all depends on the type of mixer you are using and the speed of your mixer. It takes me about 5 minutes for the instant coffee mixture to become light, airy and pale in color when using a handheld electric mixer almost at the highest speed. I had the same cheap hand mixer for many years and it’s still going strong!
Can You Use Regular Coffee For Whipped Coffee?
Unfortunately no. You need to use instant coffee or instant espresso powder to make this coffee recipe.
Can I Use Cold Milk and Hot Milk?
Yes, depending on your preference, you can use warm/hot milk or cold milk. Fill your glass with ice if you like.
Can I Whisk Dalgona Coffee By Hand?
Yes, you can use a whisk if you prefer however, be ready for an arm work out!
What Instant Coffee Should I Use?
Any instant coffee works well. I grew up drinking Nescafe so that is what I always buy. I don’t particularly care for dark roast Instant coffee as it tastes too bitter to me.
Will Whipped Coffee Last Overnight? Can It Be Made Ahead?
Yes, you can store the fluffy coffee mixture in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 5-7 days. Before serving it, give it a quick stir with a whisk as some of the liquid coffee separates and settles in the bottom of the container.
Can I Make Whipped Coffee Without Sugar Or Use A Sugar Alternative?
Without the addition of any sugar, the instant coffee will whip but not as light, fluffy and airy as if you use granulated sugar. Also, the consistency won’t last as long and will deflate quickly.

Yes, decaf or caffeinated instant coffee work well and whip nicely for Dalgona coffee.
