For the complete list of ingredients and exact quantities, check the printable recipe card below.
- Watermelon: Fresh seedless watermelon gives this martini the best flavor. Blend it, then strain it through a fine-mesh sieve so the cocktail is smooth and drinkable, not thick like a purée.
- Vodka: Regular vodka works beautifully, but citrus vodka or watermelon vodka can also be used if you want to lean into the fruity flavor. You don’t need top-shelf vodka.
- Fresh Lime Juice: Lime balances the sweetness of the watermelon and simple syrup. Fresh juice is best here.
- Orange Liqueur: Cointreau, Grand Marnier, or Triple Sec all work. Cointreau gives a clean orange flavor, Grand Marnier is a little richer, and Triple Sec is a more budget-friendly option.
- Simple Syrup: Start with less if your watermelon is very sweet. You can always add more after tasting.
- Garnish: A small watermelon wedge, watermelon balls, fresh mint, or a sugar rim all make this drink feel extra festive.

If your watermelon juice is super sweet, decrease the amount of simple syrup you add to the drink to your taste. For detailed instructions, check the recipe card below.
- Make Watermelon Juice: This step requires absolutely no effort! Simply put pieces, chunks or big cubes of watermelon in a blender and turn it on!
- Strain: Strain the juice through a fine-mesh sieve, pressing on the solids. You don’t want this to be like watermelon puree but a thin juice.
- Shake: Add watermelon juice, vodka, orange liqueur, lime juice and simple syrup into a cocktail shaker. Fill it with ice and shake vigorously for 40 seconds.
- Serve: Strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish and serve.

🔪 Recipe Tips: Prep & Adjustments
- Use cold watermelon: Starting with chilled watermelon helps the cocktail taste colder and fresher.
- Strain the juice: This keeps the martini smooth and elegant instead of pulpy.
- Adjust the sweetness: Watermelons vary a lot. Start with ½ ounce simple syrup, taste, and add more only if needed.
- Chill the glass: A cold martini glass keeps the cocktail crisp longer.
- Shake, don’t stir: Because this drink has fresh juice and lime, shaking gives it the best chill, dilution, and texture.
🙋♀️ How Much Watermelon Juice Do I Need?
For one cocktail, you need ¼ cup of watermelon juice. A small watermelon, often sold as a personal watermelon, is more than enough. You can also buy pre-cut watermelon since you only need about ½ cup chopped watermelon for one drink.
For your reference, a personal-sized watermelon (4 to 6 pounds) yields about 4 cups of watermelon juice.

Time and Convenience: A little make-ahead prep makes this cocktail effortless. Blend and strain the watermelon juice earlier in the day, then keep it chilled in the refrigerator. When guests arrive, all you have to do is shake, strain, and serve.
Finances: This is a great way to use part of a large watermelon, especially if you bought one for a cookout or summer gathering. A few cups of watermelon can turn into several cocktails, making this feel special without needing expensive mixers.
Environment: Using fresh watermelon is a delicious way to reduce waste when you have extra fruit. If you have more watermelon than you need for cocktails, freeze cubes for smoothies, mocktails, or to chill drinks without watering them down.

🤔 Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use watermelon vodka?
Yes. Watermelon vodka can be used in this watermelon martini if you want a stronger watermelon flavor. I usually prefer regular vodka because fresh watermelon juice already gives the drink plenty of natural fruit flavor.
Can I make watermelon juice ahead of time?
Yes. Fresh watermelon juice can be made ahead and stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days. Stir or shake it before using because it may separate.
Can I use bottled watermelon juice?
Yes, but fresh watermelon juice has the best flavor. If using bottled watermelon juice, taste before adding simple syrup because some brands are already sweetened. Also make sure it is made with real fruit for the best flavor and consistency.
Is this the same as a watermelon lemon drop martini?
Not exactly. A watermelon lemon drop martini usually leans more into lemon juice and sugar, while this watermelon martini uses lime juice, orange liqueur, vodka, and fresh watermelon juice for a lighter, more refreshing flavor.
Can I make a pitcher of watermelon martinis?
Yes. Multiply the ingredients by the number of servings and combine everything except the ice in a pitcher. Keep chilled, then shake individual servings with ice before straining into glasses.
