It’s the kind of cocktail that feels festive without being fussy. Rim the glasses with salt, blend everything until slushy, and you have a pitcher-style frozen margarita that’s perfect for taco night, Cinco de Mayo, backyard cookouts, or any warm-weather gathering.
The best part? You can adjust the sweetness to your taste. Keep it tart and punchy with less syrup, or add a little more for a smoother, restaurant-style frozen margarita.

✔️ Ingredients, Substitutions & Swaps
For the complete list of ingredients and exact quantities, check the printable recipe card below.
- Tequila: Use silver/blanco tequila for a clean, crisp margarita or reposado tequila for a slightly smoother, warmer flavor. You don’t need top-shelf tequila, but choose one you’d happily sip in a cocktail. One of my favorite brands is Hornitos
- Fresh Lime Juice: Freshly squeezed lime juice gives this frozen margarita its bright, tart flavor. Bottled lime juice can taste flat or bitter, so fresh is best here.
- Triple Sec or Cointreau: Orange liqueur adds sweetness, citrus flavor, and that classic margarita taste. Cointreau is a great option if you want a cleaner, more polished flavor, but a good-quality triple sec also works. Orange grand marnier can bring forth a more sweet citrus flavor.
- Agave Syrup or Simple Syrup: Start with 2 tablespoons for a tart margarita and increase to 4 tablespoons for a more balanced drink. Frozen cocktails often taste less sweet once blended with ice, so taste and adjust before serving.
- Ice: Ice gives the margarita its slushy texture. A high-powered blender works best, but a regular blender can work if you blend in short bursts and stop to scrape or stir as needed.
- Salt and Lime Wedges: Use lime wedges to moisten the rims of the glasses, then dip them in kosher salt or margarita salt.

Scroll to the printable recipe card for exact instructions.
- Prepare the glasses: Spread kosher salt or margarita salt on a small plate. Rub a lime wedge around the rim of each glass, then dip the rim into the salt. Set the glasses aside or chill them in the freezer while you make the margaritas.
- Blend the margaritas: Add the tequila, fresh lime juice, triple sec or Cointreau, 2 tablespoons of agave syrup or simple syrup, and the ice to a large blender.
- Blend until slushy: Blend until the mixture is smooth, icy, and pourable. Taste and add more sweetener, 1 tablespoon at a time, if desired.
- Serve immediately: Pour into the prepared glasses, garnish with lime wedges, and serve right away.

💡 Recipe Tips: Prep & Adjustments
- Use fresh lime juice: This is the main flavor of the drink, so fresh lime juice makes a big difference.
- Start with less sweetener: You can always add more, but you can’t take it out. For a tart margarita, start with 2 tablespoons. For a smoother, more balanced drink, use 3-4 tablespoons. My husband always asks me to make them extra sweet for him!
- Chill the glasses: A few minutes in the freezer helps the margaritas stay icy longer.
- Use a high-powered blender if possible: It creates a smoother, more even slushy texture.
- Serve right away: Frozen margaritas are best immediately after blending, before the ice begins to melt and separate.
- Blend in batches if needed: If your blender is smaller, don’t overfill it. Blend half the recipe at a time for the best texture.
💡 Shortcut Frozen Limeade Margarita
For a quick shortcut version, use 1 can frozen limeade concentrate and 3/4 can water in place of the fresh lime juice and sweetener. Blend with the tequila, triple sec, and ice until slushy. Taste before serving, since frozen limeade is already sweet you may need to add more water or ice.
✔️ Make-Ahead Tips
You can mix the tequila, lime juice, triple sec, and sweetener up to 1 day ahead. Cover and refrigerate overnight. When ready to serve, add the chilled mixture to the blender with the ice and blend until slushy.
Do not blend the margaritas too far in advance, as the ice will melt and the texture will become watery.

Notes
- You don’t need top-shelf tequila for margaritas, but good-quality tequila makes a better-tasting cocktail. Look for 100% agave tequila when possible.
- Silver/blanco tequila gives the drink a bright, clean flavor. Reposado tequila adds a slightly smoother, warmer note.
- Start with 2 tablespoons of sweetener for a tart margarita. Use 3-4 tablespoons for a more balanced, restaurant-style frozen margarita.
- Chill the glasses in the freezer before serving to help the margaritas stay colder longer.
- A high-powered blender gives the smoothest frozen texture.
- For a make-ahead option, combine the tequila, lime juice, triple sec, and sweetener without the ice. Cover and refrigerate overnight. Blend with ice just before serving.
