Makes 4 servings

Ingredients

  • 1 cup tequila, silver/blanco or reposado (8 fl oz / 240 ml)
  • 1 cup fresh lime juice, 8 fl oz / 240 ml
  • ½ cup good-quality triple sec, such as Cointreau (4 fl oz / 120 ml)
  • 2-4 tablespoons agave syrup, simple syrup, or other sweetener, plus more to taste (1-2 fl oz / 30-60 ml)
  • 6 cups ice, about 24 ounces by weight / 680 g
  • Lime wedges, for rimming the glasses and garnish
  • Kosher salt or margarita salt, for rimming the glasses

Instructions

  1. Spread kosher salt or margarita salt on a small plate. Rub a lime wedge around the rim of each glass, then dip the rim into the salt. Set aside.
  2. Add the tequila, fresh lime juice, triple sec or Cointreau, 2 tablespoons of agave syrup or simple syrup, and the ice to a large blender.
  3. Blend until smooth and slushy. Taste and add more sweetener, 1 tablespoon at a time, if desired.
  4. Pour into the prepared glasses, garnish with lime wedges, and serve immediately.

Notes

  • You don't need top-shelf tequila for margaritas, but good-quality tequila makes a better-tasting cocktail. Look for 100% agave tequila when possible.
  • Silver/blanco tequila gives the drink a bright, clean flavor. Reposado tequila adds a slightly smoother, warmer note.
  • Start with 2 tablespoons of sweetener for a tart margarita. Use 3-4 tablespoons for a more balanced, restaurant-style frozen margarita.
  • Chill the glasses in the freezer before serving to help the margaritas stay colder longer.
  • A high-powered blender gives the smoothest frozen texture.
  • For a make-ahead option, combine the tequila, lime juice, triple sec, and sweetener without the ice. Cover and refrigerate overnight. Blend with ice just before serving.
Shortcut option: Use 1 can frozen limeade concentrate and ½ can water in place of the fresh lime juice and sweetener. Blend with the tequila, triple sec, and ice.
