Coffee with Kathy: What You Told Us in September

Pour yourself a cup. This month I asked what happens in the moments right before you cook – and somewhere in your answers, I found your whole weeknight. I also asked one question so badly that you roasted me for it. Fairly.

(Pst… this post may contain affiliate links. You pay the same price, but I receive a few cents as a thank you for introducing you to the product. I only recommend what I personally use and love, because mindful purchasing is important to me!)

I asked you to describe what you’re craving when you’re hungry but can’t decide. Most of you answered in one word. Two of you went with “Food.” Touché.

And honestly? Fair. That was a terrible question to ask a hungry person.

But put it next to everything else you told me, and it makes perfect sense. Last month, most of you called yourselves adventurous cooks – curious, happy to wing it. I believe you. I just don’t think that’s who’s standing in the kitchen at 6 p.m.

Because when I asked what you most wish you had help with, 13 of 30 of you said the same thing: getting dinner done when you’re completely out of energy. Nothing else came close.

So here’s your weeknight, according to you: out of gas, starving, no idea what you want… scrolling until a photo makes the decision for you. Then one ingredient you don’t have and can’t swap – and you’re gone. 45 of 96 of you said that’s exactly what makes you click away.

I know that night. It’s why my own fallback is the ramen-noodle trick I told you about last time. Not a plan. Just dinner.

So, two things. Those recipe updates? Still happening. Prioritized for your convenience. And that “just pick something for me” feeling? I heard it – and I’ve got an idea brewing. More soon.

Every answer here came from someone reading a recipe on this site, just like you. Since May, you’ve answered my questions 1,268 times – and every round has changed something. The full numbers are below, along with my own answers (fair’s fair) and what I’m asking next.

Happy cooking,

What you’ve changed so far

June: You barely used the AI buttons, so I took them down. You asked what the trusted-source button does, so I built a plain-English guide to it.

July + August: You told me you head straight for the recipe card and improvise anyway, so we’re reworking older recipes with consistent cards and real swap tips.

September: You need to find better meals with less stress. So we’re cooking up two new ideas: a recipe filter (see below!) and curated meal plans with shopping lists.

Next up:

  1. What does cooking at home mean to you?
  2. When you find a recipe here that you love, what do you do?
  3. When you’re hunting for a recipe here, what’s the first thing you’d filter by? (psst… we’re building a filter page–see above!)
  4. When you make a restaurant or chain favorite at home, the best part is…

Look for it on recipe pages – and your answer just might end up right here.
