Makes 4 servings

Ingredients

  • 4 cups frozen strawberries, (about 20 ounces / 567 g)
  • 1 cup silver/blanco or reposado tequila, (8 fl oz / 240 ml)
  • ½ cup fresh lime juice, (4 fl oz / 120 ml)
  • ¼ cup orange liqueur, triple sec, or Cointreau (2 fl oz / 60 ml)
  • cup agave syrup, simple syrup, or other liquid sweetener (about 2.7 fl oz / 80 ml)
  • ½ to 1 cup ice, about 2 to 4 ounces by weight
  • Kosher salt or margarita salt, for rimming the glasses
  • Fresh strawberries and/or lime wedges, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Spread kosher salt or margarita salt on a small plate. Rub a lime wedge around the rim of each glass, then dip the rim into the salt. Set the glasses aside.
  2. Add the frozen strawberries, tequila, fresh lime juice, orange liqueur, agave syrup or simple syrup, and ½ cup ice to a large blender.
  3. Blend until smooth, thick, and slushy. If the margarita is too thick, add a small splash of lime juice or water and blend again. If you want it frostier, add more ice and blend until smooth.
  4. Taste and adjust with more sweetener or lime juice, if desired.
  5. Pour into the prepared glasses, garnish with strawberries and/or lime wedges, and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Frozen strawberries work best because they give the margaritas a thick, slushy texture.
  • Use silver/blanco tequila for a crisp, clean flavor or reposado tequila for a smoother, warmer flavor.
  • You don't need top-shelf tequila, but good-quality tequila makes a better cocktail. Look for 100% agave tequila when possible.
  • Start with ½ cup ice, then add more if you want a thicker frozen margarita.
  • Strawberries vary in sweetness, so taste after blending and adjust with more agave syrup or simple syrup if needed.
  • A high-powered blender works best for frozen fruit.
  • Serve immediately for the best texture. Frozen margaritas will thin out as they sit.
  • To make ahead, combine the tequila, lime juice, orange liqueur, and sweetener up to 1 day ahead. Refrigerate, then blend with frozen strawberries and ice just before serving.
